Norwood High's Alfred FincherThe High 5 Athlete for Friday, Jan. 19, is Norwood High three-sport star Alfred Fincher (pictured, right). SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch was immediately won over by this senior's charisma and overall talent.

Fincher is recognized as one of the most gifted athletes in the state. He captained the Mustangs football team to its second undefeated, Super Bowl-winning season in school history -- going 12-0 and finishing No. 1 in the WCVB Eastern Mass. Poll.

Now, he's leading the highly-ranked Norwood basketball team toward a Bay State Conference title and run for the Division 2 state title. Come springtime, he will sprint and jump for the acclaimed Mustang track team.

He's a quiet, unassuming young man out of uniform, but when he puts the jersey on, "my emotions just take over," he says.

He's as impressive off the court, as well, where his peers voted him class president. For all of these gifts, Fincher has been awarded a scholarship to play football at the University of Connecticut next fall.

Fincher would like to thank all of his family and his three fine coaches at Norwood -- football coach Tom Lamb, basketball coach Dave Powell and track coach Jim Forrest -- for their help and support throughout his career.

High 5, a weekly look at a Massachusetts high school athlete, is in its 16th year of providing Channel 5 viewers an indepth look at one of the Bay State's finest. Check here every week to see who Mike Lynch picks to win this week's award.
