The High 5 Athlete for Friday, Jan. 26, is Melrose High basketball star Quiana Copeland (pictured, right). SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch was amazed with this senior's commitment to excellence on and off the court.
On the court, Copeland is Melrose's pivotal player, scoring over 20 points per game. Last year, she led the squad to a 25-1 season and a trip to the State finals. This year, they're right back into the thick of the championship race.
Coach Dave Brady knows a big reason why is his center who has been a Metco student in the Melrose system since the fifth grade. Copeland commutes 90 minutes every morning, taking two buses and the subway, waking up every morning around 5:15 and not getting home until around 9 that night -- sometimes as late as 11.
"And I've never heard her complain about her day," Brady said.
Thanks to this outstanding performance as a true student-athlete, Copeland has earned a full scholarship to Providence College, where she will play Big East basketball.
High 5, a weekly look at a Massachusetts high school athlete, is in its 16th year of providing Channel 5 viewers an indepth look at one of the Bay State's finest. Check here every week to see who Mike Lynch picks to win this week's award.
