Say good-bye to SmarTraveler...
...but say hello to 511 Massachusetts.
Mass Highway’s SmarTraveler Information Service is changing in a big way next week.
In 1993, Mass Highway led the nation in establishing a call-in information service for drivers to be updated on travel conditions. Since then the service has received over 63 million calls and continues to be the most heavily used service of it’s kind in the nation.
In 2001 the federal government designated 511 as a number that states can use to provide traveler information services. Over 30 511 systems have now been established nationally.
SmarTraveler will make that shift starting on Monday, October 15. People calling from wireless telephones will now have to press 511. The *1 access number will continue to operate in parallel for a month or two. Callers dialing in from land-line telephones will still need to dial 617-374-1234.
In addition to the new number, the service will expand coverage to include Route 290 between Route 495 and the Mass Pike. This expansion provides service to the Worcester area for the first time.
